09:00 – A tour of Guohua Street: where the food expedition begins

A good day begins, of course, on Tainan’s liveliest street,Guohua Street! There is every kind of traditional street food here, more than the eye can take in.

Recommended:

• A-song Gua Bao: A soft, springy bun with deeply flavoured braised pork and a touch of pickled greens — a flavour found only in Tainan.
• Jinde Spring Rolls: Rolled to order and generously filled, refreshing rather than greasy, and a favourite among many locals.
• Shijingjiu Oyster Omelette: Plump oysters cooked exactly right and finished with the house sauce — impossible to forget.

On Guohua Street you can eat as you walk, feel the unhurried pace of Tainan life, and discover many distinctive little shops.

10:30 – Through time: Shennong Street and Xinyi Street

Turn a corner from Guohua Street and we enter the nostalgic atmosphere ofShennong Street. Many houses here survive from the Qing dynasty and the Japanese colonial era: red brick walls, wooden doors and lattice windows, and a story in every corner.

• Shennong Street: By day you can admire the old architecture; by night it becomes a romantic street of lanterns, with design shops and cafes tucked among the houses.
• Xinyi Street: Connected to Shennong Street but quieter, with less bustle and more calm. There are distinctive small shops and old-house guesthouses here too, ideal if you enjoy photography and looking for unusual scenes.

12:30 – A cultured lunch: Weiwu Tea House

When your legs tire, it is time to find somewhere to rest properly and enjoy a leisurely lunch.Weiwu Tea Houseis hidden down a small lane, converted from an old Japanese-style house and full of nostalgic atmosphere.

Recommended dishes: They serve refined Japanese set meals, and matcha lovers must not miss the matcha desserts and drinks: a rich tea fragrance spreading through the mouth, deeply satisfying.

[Afternoon] Art x history x design, perfectly combined

14:00 – Blueprint Culture and Creative Park: essential for photographs

Well fed, we come to the artisticBlueprint Culture and Creative Park. Once judicial dormitories, it has been painted and transformed into a lively creative quarter.

Blue walls and trompe-l’oeil spatial design make this the perfect place to fill a memory card. There are many design shops within the park too, where you can unearth a distinctive gift.

15:30 – Chihkan Tower and the surrounding lanes

As one of Tainan’s landmarks,Chihkan Toweris not to be missed by anyone who loves history. Beyond the heritage architecture, the surrounding lanes hold many surprises.

• Chihkan Tower: Understand the origins of Tainan’s history and feel the dignity and beauty of a monument.
• Exploring the lanes: The small lanes around Chihkan Tower hide many long-established shops, cafes and design stores, for example:
  • The Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple: Beside it are shops selling traditional snacks, where you can buy old-fashioned sweets.
  • The Grand Matsu Temple: Feel the power of belief, and admire the temple’s fine carving.

[Early evening] Sunset light and local food for a perfect close

17:30 – Sunset views and the Anping Tree House

As evening comes, take a bus to Anping District and feel the historical character particular to Tainan.

Anping Tree House: Tangled banyan roots and an old building merged into one, forming an extraordinary sight; under the setting sun the tree house looks more mysterious and beautiful still. There are many distinctive shops around it too.

 Anping Old Street: seafood snacks and souvenirs

Anping Old Streetis one of Tainan’s most emblematic old streets, with all kinds of seafood snacks and gifts to enjoy.

Recommended:

• Chou’s Shrimp Rolls: An essential Tainan dish: crisp outside and tender within, superb with the house sauce.
• Wenzhang Beef Soup: Fresh warm beef with scalding broth poured over it — simple, and deliciously Tainanese.
• Anping Douhua: Old-style tofu pudding, fine in texture, cooling and refreshing.

On the old street, do not forget to buy some Anping specialities such as preserved fruit and shrimp crackers, to share the pleasure of Tainan with family and friends.
