There are currently 410 parks in Tainan City, of which Tainan Park, which opened in 1917 during the Japanese colonial period, is the oldest and largest park in the city. After World War II, it was renamed Zhongshan Park.

Tainan Park is located in the North District of Tainan City. Since Tainan Park also serves as a tropical experimental forest, many tree species are planted in the park. There are more than 800 trees of various sizes and about 160 species of trees and shrubs. Many of these trees have even been designated as “precious old trees” by the Tainan City Government. The most famous of these is the century-old Bodhi tree, the largest and oldest in Taiwan.

In the center of the park, there is a swallow-shaped pond called Yantan. It existed before the park was built during the Japanese occupation, and its history is over a hundred years old! There are lotus flowers in the pond, and it is surrounded by lush greenery. It is very suitable for families to go on picnics, and for couples to go on dates. Today, under the government’s promotion of sustainable regeneration plans, Tainan Park is moving towards a balanced development that integrates historical sites, ecology, and art and culture, allowing modern parks to add a unique new look to the quaint city. In March and April, when the Bauhinia forest and Chinaberry trees are in full bloom, I highly recommend you to come to Tainan Park to enjoy the flowers.

Located in Tainan District, Taiwan’s earliest official temple historic site | Kaiyuan Temple

台南景點 | 開元寺

“The First Temple in Taiwan, Kaiyuan Temple Reborn after a Century”

The temple that Sandaomen is going to introduce this time is the first temple built in Taiwan – Kaiyuan Temple. I believe it is quite unfamiliar to many people. After all, the most well-known temples in Tainan are the Grand Tianhou Temple, Luermen, Fengshen Temple, Xiluo Temple, Daguanyin Pavilion, etc. These are also important cultural and religious centers in Tainan. Kaiyuan Temple is not only the people’s religious center, but also the first Buddhist temple in Taiwan. As early as the Qing Dynasty (the 29th year of Kangxi) in 1690, the temple was built. Wang Huaxing, the general soldier of Taiwan, and Wang Xiaozong, the military governor of Taiwan, believed that Taiwan lacked Buddhist temples, so they built a temple here.

Because of its geographical location at the mouth of the Chaitouxiang River, it was named “Haihui Temple” and was the first Buddhist temple in Taiwan at that time.
The architectural layout of Kaiyuan Temple faces west and east. After its renovation by Jiang Yuanshu, it became a complex of four-room buildings and two-wing rooms, conforming to the requirements of a temple with seven halls. The garden landscape, pavilions and palaces in the temple area are very exquisite and elegant. Coupled with the winding bridges, pavilions and other buildings, Kaiyuan Temple is also known as the best garden in Taiwan. At present, the temple preserves many cultural relics from the Zheng period, and the famous altar carvings are must-sees.

The Grand Guanyin Pavilion was built in the 32nd year of the Yongli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1678 AD). It is dedicated to Guanyin Buddha and is the earliest and largest Guanyin temple in Tainan City, as well as the one with the longest history. It was originally called “Guanyin Pavilion”, also known as “Guanyin Temple” and “Guanyin Palace”; later, in contrast to the Guanyin Pavilion at the Xiaodong Gate of the city (now destroyed), it was called “Da Guanyin Pavilion”.

The most distinctive feature of the architecture in the Great Guanyin Pavilion is that the worship pavilion in front of the main hall adopts a “porch” form that is different from the general structure. This shows why the Great Guanyin Pavilion is called a “pavilion”. The colorful paintings of Skanda and the guardian deity of the temple stand on both sides of the temple gate. The paintings were created by Tainan City painting artist Chen Shouyi. The Great Guanyin Pavilion is located on the right side of Xingji Temple (Ding Da Dao Gong Temple). Although they belong to different Buddhist and Taoist sects, they have had a close relationship since their establishment, belong to the same management organization, and are both listed as Tainan City’s designated historical sites.

The Great Guanyin Pavilion is the first official temple in Taiwan dedicated to the worship of Guanyin Bodhisattva. It is located in the same place as the Xingji Temple built in 1679 and dedicated to Baosheng Dadi. The two temples are connected by an official hall in the middle that is rarely seen today. In the past, officials and civilians would change their clothes in the official hall before entering to worship, and then go to the two temples through the octagonal gate, which has become a special scene of Buddhist and Taoist temples worshipping together in the same place.

On Ximen Road, you can see a unique-looking Starbucks. The building structure is built in the shape of triangular geometric shapes, with black glass on the exterior wall, green grass landscaping, and outdoor garden coffee tables and chairs. The style is obviously different from other stores. You can feel a different atmosphere just outside the door. Many people come to check it out, and it has therefore become a popular spot for Instagram check-ins and photos.

When you walk into the store, you can smell the aroma of brewing coffee. A leisurely atmosphere permeates the store as people enjoy their coffee and chat with their good friends. In addition to the green-based decoration, which represents the classic color of Starbucks, the wooden furniture and simple pillow cushions allow guests to spend an afternoon here easily. In addition to the same items on the counter menu as other Starbucks, this is the only Starbucks in Tainan’s North District that sells nitrogen cold brew coffee. Nitrogen is added to the cold brew coffee to create a dense and delicate foam similar to draft beer, which has a slightly sweet aftertaste and is quite smooth.

If you have the chance to come to the North District, in addition to coming to this Starbucks to drink coffee and enjoy a wonderful afternoon, you can also take some special internet-friendly photos here and share them with your good friends around you.

The Qianqi Seed Museum on Dongfeng Road in Tainan’s North District is located in the city but has a sense of paradise. The small stone brick walls are filled with lush trees, and from the outside it seems somewhat out of place in Tainan city.

This place is like an art gallery. Admission is charged and most of the exhibits cannot be touched, but this also maintains the quality of the museum, allowing green leaves and wood to cover the entire seed museum.

After buying the ticket, you can get a packet of seeds, and everyone can get a different surprise. Looking around, you can see lush green plants everywhere, as well as a variety of seeds that the owner has collected over the years. Although the park is not large, you can still feel the beauty of plants in this lush world. While introducing his collection, the museum owner showed everyone the colorful and uniquely shaped seeds. The seeds produced by each plant have different styles in shape and color. The museum owner’s insightful explanation and these seeds are so fascinating that it is like entering a storybook. I completely forgot that this place is hidden in the urban area of Tainan. Coming here to see these seeds, in addition to gaining knowledge about plants, the appreciation can also cleanse my soul. Coming here will definitely give you a lot.

Kaiji Jade Emperor Temple is the oldest temple in Taiwan. It is located on Youmin Street in the North District of Tainan City. It is commonly known as the Old Tiangong Temple. Every year on the ninth day of the lunar calendar, the birthday of the Jade Emperor, it attracts devout believers from all over Taiwan to come and pray for peace and prosperity in the coming year. Regarding the history of the construction of the Kaiji Jade Emperor Palace, it was founded in the 24th year of the Yongli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1670 AD) and was completed at the end of September in the 83rd year of the Republic of China (1994 AD).

According to the traditional customs, when many people encounter problems with Tai Sui and villains, they will go to Kaiji Jade Emperor Palace to find a professional priest to perform a [sacrifice]. During the ceremony, the relevant props will be prepared, and then the god will be hung around your neck. During the ceremony, the priest will recite scriptures continuously and then pierce the paper substitute with a knife. Before the ceremony ends, he will whip the god three times to complete the ceremony. Even in today’s society, it is still one of the Taoist rituals that many modern people believe in. When it comes to in-depth tourism in Tainan, Tainan Kaiji Jade Emperor Temple is still one of the first choices for many people. In addition to experiencing the Taoist traditions that have been passed down to this day, you can also pray for yourself or your family to have good luck in the new year, and use the abundant incense to bless the coming days to be peaceful, stable, and good weather.

National Cheng Kung University is the oldest university in southern Taiwan. Its long history gives the campus’s buildings and tree landscapes a sense of vicissitudes, which is also a place worth seeing for tourists. Long corridors, red brick walls, and avenues with straight and tall trees are rarely seen in universities in Taiwan. There is also a big banyan tree inside, which is said to have been planted on the campus of National Cheng Kung University by the then emperor during the Showa period. Today, nearly a hundred years later, it still stands tall in the grassland, becoming one of the symbols of National Cheng Kung University.

In addition to the lush scenery before your eyes, the architecture of National Cheng Kung University also echoes the ancient capital of Tainan. Walking on the campus of National Cheng Kung University, you can see many buildings made of bricks and tiles. The classical school buildings and city gate turrets are all real Tainan historical sites. The years that National Cheng Kung University has gone through can be seen clearly here.
