Because of its geographical location at the mouth of the Chaitouxiang River, it was named “Haihui Temple” and was the first Buddhist temple in Taiwan at that time.

The Grand Guanyin Pavilion was built in the 32nd year of the Yongli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1678 AD). It is dedicated to Guanyin Buddha and is the earliest and largest Guanyin temple in Tainan City, as well as the one with the longest history. It was originally called “Guanyin Pavilion”, also known as “Guanyin Temple” and “Guanyin Palace”; later, in contrast to the Guanyin Pavilion at the Xiaodong Gate of the city (now destroyed), it was called “Da Guanyin Pavilion”.
