Tainan West Central District Historic Sites and Attractions
Chihkan Tower
During holidays and even weekdays, Tainan Chihkan Tower is one of the must-see attractions for tourists visiting Tainan’s central and western districts, with a constant stream of people. In 1652, the Dutch built Fort Provintia here. After more than 300 years of renovation and reconstruction, it has its current appearance. It houses the Temple of the Sea God, Wenchang Pavilion and Penghu Academy. In 1997, Chihkan Tower was listed as a national first-class historical site. It is also a representative scenic spot in the central and western districts of Tainan. Walking into Chihkan Tower, large green lawns and quaint Chinese-style buildings are in sight. The most eye-catching thing is the 9 imperial steles moved from the edge of the Great South Gate, which are carried by the stone turtle-like Bishi. Legend has it that Bishi is one of the sons of the Nine Dragons and likes to carry heavy loads. Because of Bishi, Chihkan Tower has added many legends. In addition, the mysterious tunnel legend of the Half Moon Well also attracts tourists to explore. At night, yellow lights are lit around Chihkan Tower, which adds a lot of charm to the ancient building and makes Chihkan Tower have different styles during the day or at night.
