The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese festival, also known as Moon Festival. In addition to China, many countries in Central and South Asia also celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. This article will introduce to you the origin, source and customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival, so that you can learn about this traditional festival with historical significance during the festival.
The origin and date of the Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival originated in the Tang Dynasty. The 15th day of the eighth lunar month every year is one of the important traditional festivals. It was called Zhongqiu in ancient times, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Eighth Month Festival, and the Moon Worship Festival. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, people watch the bright moon, eat moon cakes, appreciate osmanthus flowers, and drink osmanthus wine. They use the full moon to express their longing for their hometown and loved ones, and pray for a good harvest and happiness.
The origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival is quite rich, including mythological stories such as Chang’e flying to the moon, Wu Gang cutting the cassia tree, and Zhu Yuanzhang’s Mooncake Uprising.
- Chang’e flies to the moon: Legend has it that Chang’e was originally Houyi’s wife. After Houyi shot down the sun, the Queen Mother of the West gave him the elixir of immortality, but Houyi was reluctant to eat it, so he gave it to Chang’e for safekeeping. Houyi’s disciple Peng Meng coveted the elixir and forced Chang’e to hand it over. Chang’e had no choice but to swallow the elixir and flew into the sky. It was the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, and the moon was big and bright. Because she didn’t want to leave Houyi, Chang’e stayed at the moon closest to the earth and lived in Guanghan Palace ever since.
- Wu Gang cuts down the cassia tree: Legend has it that Wu Gang angered the sun god Yan Emperor and was banished to the moon to cut down the immortal tree. But the laurel tree would grow back as soon as it was cut. Every time Wu Gang chopped it with the axe, the branches and leaves that were cut off would immediately grow back on the tree. After a long time, Wu Gang still could not cut down the laurel tree.
- Zhu Yuanzhang’s Mooncake Uprising: Zhu Yuanzhang led the Han people to resist the tyranny of the Yuan Dynasty and started an uprising around August 15th. They gave each other mooncakes and put notes inside the mooncakes to pass on messages. The custom of eating mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival spread among the people.
What are the customs and significance of the Mid-Autumn Festival?
Worship: The Mid-Autumn Festival is also the season for autumn crop harvest. In the past, the Mid-Autumn Festival moon worship was to celebrate the autumn harvest and worship the land god at the same time. Therefore, in traditional Mid-Autumn Festival customs, sacrifice is one of the important activities. In modern times, sacrifices are mainly made to the land god, ancestors, and the foundation god.
Eating mooncakes: Mooncakes were offerings used for worship during the Mid-Autumn Festival in ancient times, which led to the custom of eating mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival. This custom originated from when Zhu Yuanzhang launched an uprising, he would put notes in mooncakes and distribute them to various rebel forces to pass on the message. Later, the uprising was successful. To commemorate this success, Zhu Yuanzhang allowed everyone to eat mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which became the origin of the custom of eating mooncakes! Today, the shape of mooncakes also symbolizes reunion.
Eating pomelo: Around the Mid-Autumn Festival, it is the pomelo production season in Taiwan, and every household will use it for sacrifice and consumption. Because “youzi” and “youzi” have the same pronunciation, the homonym has become a symbol of good luck. Children will wear pomelo peels on their heads. Besides being cute, it is also a custom to ensure safety.
Barbecue: In recent years, Mid-Autumn barbecue has become a popular activity in Taiwan. Traditionally, there is no custom of barbecue. In 1982, Hsinchu, as the base camp for barbecue oven manufacturing, due to the sluggish export of barbecue ovens, manufacturers turned to domestic sales in large quantities. As a marketing tool, they began to reduce the price of barbecue equipment and popularize barbecue activities. Later, the barbecue sauce advertisement “One Family Barbecue, Ten Thousand Families’ Fragrance” became the driving force behind this activity.
