The 2024 Taiwan Lantern Festival is heading for its 35th year. It returns to Tainan after 16 years and is Tainan’s first international tourism event in 400 years. It coincides with the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese Zodiac. With “Dragon Shining in Tainan” as the main theme, two major lantern districts are planned: “Anping Lantern District” and “High Speed Rail Lantern District”. Through the integration of traditional lantern art and contemporary technology, as well as diverse art exhibitions and performances, Tainan’s strength as a cultural capital is on display.
The “Anping Light District” will be launched on February 3, 2024, with two major curatorial themes: “Tainan 400” and “River Lights of the Past”, with a total of 30 wonderful works and hundreds of wonderful performances on display; on the opening day, the long-awaited masterpiece of the Ming Huayuan Group: the Immortal Sea God Legend “Mazu” will be staged. In addition, performances combining drones, fireworks and light shows will also be arranged during the holiday period to create a shocking night sky spectacle.
The “High Speed Rail Lighting Area” is planned to exhibit nearly 300 various light and shadow lighting works, and the curatorship includes: “Main Exhibition Area”, “Light in the City”, and “Green Energy Lighting Area”. The 22-meter-high main lantern “Dragon Comes to Taiwan” is located here; in the exhibition planning, emphasis is placed on combining local cultural elements with Taiwan’s distinctive imagery. There will be more than 70 outstanding performance groups from home and abroad, and over a hundred exciting performances.
In order to showcase Tainan’s reputation as the “City of Gods,” the “Chengnan Lantern District” was specially planned in the urban area. Thanks to the response and participation of many local units and temples, three “Pilgrimage Roads of Light” will be planned; the lantern festival activities will also promote Tainan’s existing and distinctive Yuejin Port Lantern Festival and Longqi Light Festival.
The long river of time that has flowed for 400 years has come together at this moment in 2024. Let us gather in Tainan, the origin of Taiwan, to enjoy a feast of light and savor the warm hospitality of light and shadow art! I am Tainan! I am proud!
