The news says the building sits on a Y-shaped junction where two roads meet, and the plot is shaped like a slice of cheesecake 🍰. The owner built brilliantly along the shape of the site, so the narrowest, sharpest point of the building is only as wide as a single door. It really is paper-thin. Picture the two of us standing in front of that pure white glass door with enormous rusted metal behind us – it photographs beautifully, slimming and full of presence, like a fashion shoot.
Here is a piece of trivia 🤫 A local told me this was once a long-established soy sauce factory. The land was later bought for over NT$15 million by the current owner, an architectural designer, who built a proper steel-framed structure and then deliberately finished the metal exterior to look aged. If it were only good for photographs I would not be this excited. There is a charming takeaway window on one side, the counter is fair-faced concrete, and a row of beautiful white espresso machines sits on the shelf 😍

And when we go, we should eat everything. Two things are widely recommended: first, theorange fresh fruit sparkling slush, made with fruit from small Tainan growers – perfect in hot weather 🍹 And second, the off-menucorrugated iron caramel pudding. The caramel on top is baked crisp, with a faintly bitter, burnt fragrance like the metal on an old house, and the pudding underneath is wonderfully silky (as a pudding devotee you will lose your mind 🍮).

In the afternoon we can visitTainan Art Museum Building 2, a pure white building that looks like stacked blocks 🤍 with a dreamlike fractal glass roof. When the sun comes through, the light and shadow are so lovely that any shot comes out beautifully.
In the early evening, head to the only building in Taiwan with a rooftop shrine:the Hayashi Department Store. It preserves Showa-era retro character from the Japanese colonial period, along with that gloriously old needle-dial lift that beeps. Watching the elegant ochre building light up in warm yellow feels like slipping back in time 🕰️
Now the important part. After all that wonderful architecture, we obviously cannot stay just anywhere.

The thing I love most is that they have their ownbutlers. We won’t need to look up maps for hidden food ourselves; if we want the kind of late-night thing only locals know – beef soup you don’t have to queue for, say – we just ask a butler in the lobby. They have long lists of favourites, so they become our personal food guide 🗺️
Picture it: in the daytime we photograph ourselves at the ruin-style paper-thin house and the pure white art museum, and in the evening we eat well and walk back to 3 Door Hotel. The lift is strictly controlled, so two women travelling together feel very safe. Back in a beautifully designed room for a long shower – just imagining it feels lovely 🛁
