How are historical sites classified?

Historic sites are divided into three categories according to the competent authorities: national monuments, municipal monuments and (county/city) monuments. In the old version of the law, a three-level classification system was implemented, divided into level one, level two, and level three. Those with national historical significance are classified as level one, while those with only local historical significance are classified as level two or level three.

Anping Tree House and Yuan Deji Trading Co.

The British firm of De Kee & Co. was once an important commercial base in Tainan. With its clean, pure white exterior, it was an important Western-style building at the time. It was a base established by foreigners in Anping, Tainan after the port was opened. It preserves classic models of diplomacy at the time, and one can also learn more about Tainan’s economic status and appearance in Taiwan at the time from these historical sites.

Shigu Rentang Cultural and Creative Park

The predecessor of the Ten-Drum Rentang Cultural and Creative Park was the Chelukan Sugar Factory, which was founded by the Japanese-funded Taiwan Sugar Co., Ltd. in 1909. The Ten-Drum Rentang Cultural and Creative Park is located in the suburbs of Tainan City, separated from the noisy urban area by a quiet forest trail. It is a new world for the public to get close to culture and art.

Sicao Fort

After the outbreak of the Opium War, in order to prevent the British army from attacking Taiwan, the Qing government built ten cannon piers to form an iron wall and copper wall defense, commonly known as the “Zhenhai City”. Today, the cannon has been destroyed, and one can only feel the history of that time from the remaining ramparts and red-brick gun holes next to the playground of Zhenhai Elementary School. It is highly recommended to come and see how magnificent the scale of the cannon pier built by the Qing Dynasty was.

1611 Taiwan Shipyard

The Taiwan Ship was modeled after the “Taiwan Ship Map” in the 1706 Tang Ship Map scroll preserved in the Matsuura Historical Museum in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. It was copied by a group of Taiwan’s maritime history experts, shipbuilding history scholars, and shipbuilding masters. The 1661 Taiwan Ship Park will combine public art and ship hull displays, and operate with the concept of an “outdoor museum” to promote maritime culture, pass on Tainan’s culture and history, and preserve the ship restoration technology that is about to be lost.
