Last autumn, fire like this was lit on the sands of Yuguang Island for the first time. Firemosa, Taiwan’s \u2014 and Asia’s \u2014 first international fire dance festival, was born here, with the sound of the waves, the sunset and the flames all in the same frame. This year it is back, and it has grown.<\/p>\n

The second edition of Firemosa, the 2026 International Fire Dance Festival, runs from 24 to 26 October, falling neatly across the three-day Retrocession Day weekend. World-class fire artists from Japan, the Philippines, the United States and Hungary will take the stage across those three nights \u2014 and the main show is completely different each day. You can only see one of them per day.<\/p>\n

This article gathers everything announced so far into a guide you can follow as it stands: which night to pick, what time to arrive, whether the supporter seats are worth it, and how to actually reach the island once it closes to traffic. Our butler team also explains, from a local’s point of view, why staying in central Tainan makes this year’s festival far easier than a day trip.<\/p>\n

1. What is Firemosa? A festival that took twelve years to light<\/h2>\n

Tsai Hung-yi, director of the Coming True Fire Dance Troupe behind Firemosa, has described the troupe’s early years as “a dark decade without a stage.” Taiwan in fact has one of the largest fire dance communities in Asia \u2014 youth corps, student clubs, campfire nights, all those evenings spinning glow sticks were where fire dance began here. But in Asian society, both the safety and the artistry of fire needed time to be understood.<\/p>\n

So the troupe chose the longest and hardest road available: if there was no stage in Taiwan, they would tour the world first and return home known. After twelve years, five continents and countless awards, in 2025 they self-funded and staged Asia’s first international fire dance festival on Yuguang Island in Tainan.<\/p>\n

At this year’s press conference Tsai said something worth writing down: he hopes the next generation of Taiwanese performers will not have to tour so hard, but can stay in Taiwan to train properly \u2014 and that it will be fire dancers from around the world who fly here to watch and exchange.<\/p>\n

According to the organiser, the first Firemosa drew more than 220,000 visits. Tainan City Government was the first local authority in Taiwan to take the idea on, and Culture Affairs Bureau Director Huang Ya-ling once described Yuguang Island as a place where “you can hear the waves, take off your shoes and stand on the sand, and watch a performance with the smell of fire in the air.” There is probably nowhere else quite like it.<\/div>\n

The theme of the second edition is“Fire as the origin of civilisation”<\/strong>. From the moment humans first learned to use fire, how has it shaped the daily life, rituals and art of different cultures? From ancient tribal ceremonies such as the Tahitian fire knife dance to Japan’s Raikou Enbu, which fuses fire with light and projection technology \u2014 across three nights, the place of fire in human civilisation is told through performance.<\/p>\n

2. Three nights, three completely different main shows \u2014 one per day only<\/h2>\n

This is the single most important thing to know when planning, and the part most people miss: the 19:00\u201320:15 main stage show is different on each of the three nights, and all three run in the same time slot. See Yang Li-wei and you miss the Fire God Cup; see the opening international co-production and you miss the closing international competition.<\/p>\n

Our butler’s honest take:<\/strong>You don’t actually have to choose. 24\u201326 October is a three-day Retrocession Day weekend: stay one night and you catch two different main shows; stay two and you catch all three. That is the biggest change from last year \u2014 in 2025 the long weekend ended on a Sunday, so you had to rush home after the show. This year 26 October is a substitute holiday, so after “Stars of the World” on the 25th you still have a full day to wander Tainan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Attila Oltyan & Erin Oltyan (Hungary \/ Japan)<\/strong>\u2014 the Hungarian artist returns after performing last year, this time alongside his Japanese wife, herself a crossover artist working with fire, light and projection.<\/p>\n

Yang Li-wei x Tsai Hung-yi (Taiwan)<\/strong>\u2014 the Britain’s Got Talent Golden Buzzer winner shares the stage with the artistic director of the Coming True Fire Dance Troupe.<\/p>\n

Two masterclass talks are also planned, with speakers including Attila Oltyan and Masaaki Koga, one of Japan’s most respected street arts festival curators.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

3. The daily schedule: what time should you arrive?<\/h2>\n

The running order is the same on all three days. Worth noting: the main show starts at 19:00, but the good stuff begins rolling from 16:00 \u2014 especially the 17:00 sunset parade, a piece that only works because of this particular venue.<\/p>\n

Our butler’s recommended arrival time: around 15:30.<\/strong>Yuguang Island faces west onto the sea and is one of the few places in Tainan where you can watch the sun set over the water. Sunset on the three festival days falls at roughly 17:27, 17:26 and 17:25 \u2014 meaning the sun drops into the sea just as the 17:00\u201317:30 sunset parade finishes. That timing is no accident. Arrive early and you can find a spot on the sand, watch the parade, then wait for the main show. After the main show ends at 20:15 the whole site reverts to free entry, so if you only want a relaxed wander, turning up for the DJ set is a perfectly good way to do it.<\/div>\n

4. Is free entry enough, or should you buy into the “Spark Project”?<\/h2>\n

The most important point first:all three days of Firemosa are free to enter<\/strong>, and you can watch the full main stage show without buying anything. The “Spark Project” introduced this year is a supporter package: what you are buying is reserved seating in front of the stage, a fast-track entry lane and a limited gift pack \u2014 and, in practical terms, support that keeps the festival going.<\/p>\n

How to choose? If you don’t mind arriving a bit early and sitting on the sand to find a good angle, free entry is plenty. If you want clean photos, are travelling with older family members and would rather not stand and wait, or simply believe in what the festival is doing and want to chip in, the Spark Project makes the day considerably easier.<\/p>\n

5. Getting to Yuguang Island: three options under road closures<\/h2>\n

This is the section most worth your reading time. Yuguang Island is a small island reached by Yuguang Bridge, and even on an ordinary day the bridge is the only way in or out. With an event on this scale, restrictions are inevitable.<\/p>\n

Please note:<\/strong>The scope, hours and shuttle routes for 2026 have not yet been formally announced by the organiser or by Tainan City Government’s Transportation Bureau. What follows is how it actually worked at the first edition in 2025, offered as a planning reference. This article will be updated once official information is released.<\/div>\n

How restrictions worked at the first edition in 2025<\/h3>\n

During last year’s festival, Yuguang Bridge was subject to traffic control from 12:00 to 22:00 daily. Apart from emergency vehicles, official vehicles, shuttle buses and island residents, all cars and scooters were barred. Visitors parked off-island and transferred to a free shuttle bus or walked in. Shuttles ran from 13:30 to 21:30 every 15 to 20 minutes, calling at the Indigenous Culture Hall, Eternal Golden Castle and Yuguang Island stops.<\/p>\n

The main show doesn’t start until 19:00, which means every daytime is completely free. This is an event on a beach, sitting from dusk into the night. Preparing for it is nothing like preparing for an indoor show.<\/p>\n

Put all of the above together and the answer is clear: three different main shows on three nights, a 21:30 finish every night, and road closures on the island. This is an event where a day trip feels rushed and a single night feels exactly right.<\/p>\n

It is about a five-minute walk from the hotel to Tainan Railway Station, and buses from both the north and south stops connect to routes towards Yuguang Island. You never have to touch a steering wheel, or worry whether the off-island car parks still have space.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\nDo I need a ticket for Firemosa?<\/summary>\n
All three days are free to enter, and you can see the full main stage show without a ticket. There is also a “Spark Project” supporter package (NT$2,000 Spark, NT$3,600 Wildfire) offering reserved seating in front of the stage, a VIP fast-track entry lane and a limited gift pack.<\/div>\n<\/details>\n
\nWhich three days is Firemosa 2026, and where is it held?<\/summary>\n
From Saturday 24 October to Monday 26 October 2026, on the beach at Yuguang Island in Anping District, Tainan \u2014 exactly the three-day Retrocession Day weekend.<\/div>\n<\/details>\n
\nIs the programme the same every day?<\/summary>\n
No. 24 October is the international co-production “Firemosa”, 25 October is the international fire dance theatre “Stars of the World” starring Yang Li-wei, and 26 October is the Fire God Cup international fire dance competition. All three run from 19:00 to 20:15, so you can only see one per day.<\/div>\n<\/details>\n
\nWhat time should I arrive, and when does it end?<\/summary>\n
Each day opens at 16:00 with a band on the main stage and closes with the night DJ set at 21:30. We suggest arriving around 15:30, which gives you time to find a spot and catch the 17:00 sunset parade.<\/div>\n<\/details>\n
\nCan I drive straight to Yuguang Island?<\/summary>\n
At the first edition in 2025, Yuguang Bridge was restricted from 12:00 to 22:00 daily and closed to ordinary cars and scooters; visitors parked off-island and transferred to a free shuttle bus. Details for 2026 have not been announced, so we recommend planning around public transport.<\/div>\n<\/details>\n
\nHow do I get to Yuguang Island from Tainan Railway Station?<\/summary>\n
Following the 2025 arrangements, take bus 2 from the station’s north stop to Binhai, or bus 19 (north stop) or buses 14 and 98 (south stop) to the Eternal Golden Castle, then transfer to the free shuttle. The 2026 routes are pending official confirmation.<\/div>\n<\/details>\n
\nCan I bring a chair or a tripod?<\/summary>\n
The performance area is a beach: seating is unnumbered and everyone sits on the ground, so a picnic mat is a good idea. The organiser explicitly prohibits tripods throughout the audience area.<\/div>\n<\/details>\n
\nCan Spark Project tickets be refunded?<\/summary>\n
Yes, but the request must be made by the deadline 10 days before the performance (14 October), with a handling fee of 10% of the face value. Please follow ERA Ticket’s published refund procedure for details.<\/div>\n<\/details>\n
\nWhat happens if it rains?<\/summary>\n
As an outdoor beach venue, the festival is weather-dependent, and the organiser normally announces any changes on its official social channels shortly before or during the event. Check the Coming True Fire Dance Troupe’s official Facebook page before you set out.<\/div>\n<\/details>\n
